School Emergency Drills

  • Regular emergency drills are a key part of keeping our schools safe. By practicing how to respond to different types of incidents—like earthquakes, evacuations, lockdowns, and more—students and staff build the skills and confidence they need to act quickly and safely in real situations.

     

    ÅÝܽÊÓƵapp schools follow an annual drill schedule based on Alaska law and national best practices. Each school conducts a variety of age-appropriate exercises throughout the year, designed to reflect real-world conditions while prioritizing the emotional well-being of students. All drills are recorded and reviewed to support continuous improvement and ensure compliance with safety requirements.

     

    The current district-wide drill schedule includes:

    Drop, Cover & Hold (Earthquake)

    Twice per year (October + spring semester)

    Evacuation

    Monthly during the school year (10 total)

    Active Threat

    Twice per year (1st and 3rd Quarter)

    Shelter-in-Place (Hazardous Materials)

    Once per school year (may be tabletop exercise)

     

    These drills help prepare everyone—students, teachers, and staff—to respond calmly and effectively when it matters most.
